Each year, our BTEC Business students visit The University of Hull for a full day of lectures and interactive activities on a particular topic within the Business curriculum. In 2023, the topic centred sustainable business with the aim to inspire Wyke’s future business leaders in acting ethically.
The day started with a session from Dr Fiona Walkley, Senior Lecturer in Marketing. Fiona gave a fantastic insight into sustainable practice and why this was so important in the workplace. Students were then set a task to put together an outfit using second-hand clothing.
During lunch, students were given the opportunity to explore the different buildings, accommodation, and subject areas within the university’s campus to help towards making an informed decision on their next steps.
The second part of the day saw students put classroom theory into practice with an entrepreneurial competition. Each group was presented with a different target market with individual needs. Students were tasked with designing a brand-new sustainable product and pitching this to the judges using their knowledge of the marketing mix. Creative ideas included a t-shirt for health and fitness lovers made from ocean plastics, gardening tools complete with an app for grandparents and their grandchildren and Wyke’s take on HelloFresh specifically for young families.
