A-Level Students Set to Explore the Eternal City: A Journey Through Rome

The trip offers 30 A-Level students from Philosophy, Sociology, and Classical Civilisation will embark on an exciting four-day educational adventure to Rome. Led by teachers and subject specialists, the trip will provide a unique opportunity to experience history, religion, and culture first hand in the Eternal City.

Claire Bhana, Head of Philosophy, highlighted the significance of the trip for students across different subjects:

“For Classical Civilisation students, the visit to the Colosseum and Roman Forum will be particularly relevant. For RS and Sociology students (who study a unit on Beliefs and Values in Society and look at the function and role of religion in society), the trip will give students the opportunity to see faith in action, to witness religious practice, and to see the historical impact of religion on our society and what it continues to mean to people today.”

A Journey Through Time and Faith

The group’s itinerary is packed with key historical and cultural landmarks:

  • Castel Gandolfo – A visit to this picturesque walled town just outside Rome will provide a glimpse into the Papal Palace and Gardens, traditionally the summer retreat of the Pope. The Vatican’s observatory and astronomical domes will offer students a fascinating perspective on the intersection of faith and science.
  • Colosseum and Roman Forum – Walking through the ruins of ancient Rome will allow Classical Civilisation students to immerse themselves in the grandeur of Roman history. The scale of the Colosseum and the remnants of the Forum will bring their studies to life.
  • Vatican Museum & St. Peter’s Basilica – Home to some of the world’s most significant religious and artistic treasures, these sites will showcase the historical and cultural impact of Christianity. Students will be awed by Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel and the architectural wonder of St. Peter’s.
  • Catacombs – Exploring the underground burial sites will offer a moving insight into early Christian history and the perseverance of faith through the ages.

This immersive experience will allow students to bridge the gap between their academic studies and the real-world significance of history, philosophy, and religion. From the grandeur of the Vatican to the echoes of gladiatorial battles in the Colosseum, Rome will prove to be an inspiring classroom like no other.
