Today sees another year of fantastic results at Wyke Sixth Form College. Our students have shown impressive resilience and determination to deliver work at the highest level despite having to cope with the significant impact of the pandemic on their education before they came to Wyke. Their sustained effort, supported by our exceptional teaching and pastoral teams, have led to fantastic outcomes and destinations.

This year, Wyke’s outstanding Oxbridge programme continued to place students at these highly prestigious universities. All eyes were on former Hull Trinity House student Daniel Sleight as he opened his outstanding results of three A*s in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics. These exceptional grades secured his place to study Biology at The University of Oxford. He said: “I’m really happy. Over the moon. Job Done. Oxford is such an aspirational place and through the Wyke Oxbridge programme, I thought ‘why not just go for it’. Gaining a place at Oxford must be my highlight of coming to Wyke”.

Whilst most students progress onto university, a growing number of students elect to follow an advanced apprenticeship. Former Beverley Grammar student, Sam Davies secured multiple offers from a range of blue-chip companies before settling on project control engineering at BP. After collecting his A in Business, B in Economics and B in History, Sam said, “I’ll be working on the first hydrogen generating plant in the world, so the journey starts here, I guess. I knew that combining work with a university place would work better than the traditional university route. I’m going to be learning surrounded by industry professionals, so I knew it was the right choice for me.”

With an A* in PE, an A in Biology and an A in Chemistry, former Sirius Academy North student Kiza David has secured his place to study Medicine at the Hull York Medical School. Kiza lived Wyke to the full, participating in many enrichments. He was elected as President of the Student Association, played in the College’s football team, and as a high achieving student, he also completed Wyke’s Flyer and Pre-Medical Programmes. After collecting his results, Kiza said: “As well as gaining a place at Medical School, my highlight of college was planning Wyke’s first ever Prom. It took a lot of organising and I was really pleased with the outcome”. Kiza is one of 47 Wyke students who have secured a place on either Medicine, Veterinary Science or Dentistry courses over the last 4 years. An outstanding achievement.

The geographical reach and appeal of Wyke is illustrated by former Caistor Grammar student Lucy Harper-Smith. Her vocational programme of Criminology, PE, and Health and Social Care gained A, B and Distinction grades. After collecting her results, Lucy said, “In September, I’m going to Norland College in Bath to study to become a Norland Nanny. It’s a highly selective college. The interview process is rigorous, with only 100 candidates accepted each year, and I’m so happy I got in”.

On why she chose this pathway Lucy said, “I’ve always bonded with children; I just love working with them. I will be studying for a degree and a diploma at the same time, so it’s going to be hard work, but so rewarding. The next three years will be the best thing ever”.

Principal, Julie Peaks said:

“I am so proud of our superb students’ fantastic achievements. These results really are remarkable with 139 students achieving the top A* grade. All credit to our exceptional staff and parents who have supported our students to such impressive success.  We can be confident of a bright future with such capable and resilient young people going on to play leading roles in our community.”

Mr John Wilson, Chair of the Wyke Sixth Form College Corporation, added:

Once again, our students have achieved an excellent set of results.  I congratulate them for their hard work and wish them well for the future. Thanks must go to all the teaching and support staff for their hard work and dedication.”
