A student from Wyke Sixth Form College has come back from the summer with two sporting accomplishments under her belt. Emma Labourne, who has been sailing competitively since 2009, attended the National Championships of the UK Windsurfing Association in September and finished 1st girl and 7th overall. She also competed in the Youth European Championships in Turkey in July and finished 10th overall.
Emma, 17, said of the latter: ‘I was very happy with my place; it was a real improvement on my performance last year, when I came 20th.’
But this is the last year Emma will be able compete in the Under-19s category. She is, however, already setting her sights on another competition: ‘Next year I plan on attending the Women’s European and World Championships.’
‘It would be my dream to one day compete in the Olympics. But in the meantime I’m focusing on my studies’.
Emma is currently in the second year of studying for a BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport, alongside which she is taking AS Biology. Asked how she fits windsurfing as part of Team GB’s National Youth Squad around her college work, she said, ‘College have been really good, and actually the Sports BTEC really complements the sailing activities.’
