Nice Try Loui

A Wyke Sixth Form College student who designed a banner which is now seen prominently in rugby matches in the City has been named Hull’s Teen Entrepreneur of 2014.

Loui Fowler, 16, currently a student at Wyke Sixth Form College studying Business and Accounting, attended the Enterprise Awards evening at the Guildhall on Friday evening, where he was presented with the award.

Loui said, “It all started when I won a competition while a student at Malet Lambert two years ago after being told by my Business teacher to give it a go.

“My original business idea was to create a type of waterproof banner which could be used for sporting events as well as educational purposes.

“The idea was to create a reusable, retractable banner that can be used over and over again.”

His invention is a lightweight, handheld banner, which conveniently folds up when not in use.”

It has seen a lot of use in rugby matches by fans to indicate whether a try has been scored – or not.

Explaining their popularity, Loui said, “These portable banners can be reused over and over again and are not expensive.”

The Triple R Banner (which stands for “Reliable, Reusable and Recyclable”) has previously won the Badger’s Sett Enterprise Award. Remembering that occasion, Loui said: “I had to present my idea in front of the Youth Enterprise Partnership, including their patron, former Apprentice contestant Ruth Badger.”

After demonstrating his prototype model, he was awarded £2,000 to start up the business, including £500 towards mentoring fees.

Commenting on Loui’s award, Mike Notarantonio from Youth Enterprise said “It was great to see Loui there and receiving this recognition. We hope he can continue to push on with his business ideas whilst also achieving in his studies at Wyke.”

But where next for Loui? “After finishing at Wyke I’d like to go to Manchester, where I’ve had an offer from Ruth to work with her on a consultancy basis.

“In the long term, my ambition is to run my own business.” In the meantime, Loui said he will be updating his website with new content and products soon.
