Hello Winterton Community Academy

This an exclusive webpage that we have designed to help guide and support students from Winterton Community Academy in applying to Wyke Sixth Form College.

We’ve gathered together a number of video resources to further your understanding about Wyke, to communicate what makes it such a special place to study. Our “Review of 2020-21” introduces you to the range of subjects, student success and fantastic enrichment opportunities. Further down the page there’s a guide on how to apply to help you secure your place.

For students targeting 6s and above in their GCSEs, we have an insight to our Oxbridge and Pre-Medical Programmes.

This is followed by some case studies of former students, why they chose Wyke, the subjects they studied and their plans for the future.

You can then find information and book tickets for our open events below.

NEW courses at Wyke

t-levels

Wyke has recently been selected by the government to provide the new T Level in Health qualification, a decision that reflects the national status of our college. T Levels signal a major step forward in the Government’s 10-year ambition to overhaul technical education. These are technical alternatives to A Levels, combining classroom theory, practical training and an industry placement. The new 2-year course, equivalent to 3 A levels, has been developed in collaboration with employers and businesses so that the content meets the needs of industry and prepares students for work.

T Levels will offer students a mixture of classroom learning and ‘on-the job’ experience during an industry placement of at least 315 hours (approximately 45 days). They will provide the knowledge and experience needed to open the door into skilled employment, further study or a higher apprenticeship.

In addition to this, we have recently added a new Computer Science course and developed our Performing Arts offering with students now being able to choose this as a 1, 2 or 3 BTEC equivalent course option.

Case Studies of former Winterton Community Academy students

Marcus Smith

Physics – A
Chemistry – A
Mathematics  – A

Physics at the University of Leicester

Our specialist Enrichment Programme offers our students the opportunity to visit destinations across the globe which leave them with unforgettable memories.

Former Winterton Community Academy student, Marcus Smith, opened his results and was delighted to secure a place at the University of Leicester to study Physics.

Marcus had many highlights during his time at Wyke, but said participating in South Africa trip was a once in a lifetime opportunity: “When we went to South Africa we spent one week completing a community project in a primary school which was really rewarding. The following week we travelled to a nature reserve, went on safari and got to zipline across the treetops.”

“My advice for any student considering studying at Wyke is to work hard.”

Emily Galbraith

A Level Chemistry – A*
A Level Biology – A
A Level Mathematics – A*

Destination: Medicine at Hull York Medical Medical School

After completing three highly academic A Levels, an EPQ and Wyke’s Pre-Medical Programme, former Winterton Community Academy student Emily is now enjoying studying Medicine Hull York Medical School.

Upon opening her results which secured her place, Emily said: “I’ve been really worried about my results but now I have them I’m just really pleased!”

“I’m now going to study Medicine at Hull York Medical School. Once I complete my degree I will become a doctor.”

To support students with Emily’s career ambition, Wyke’s Pre-Medical Programme is specifically designed to assist high achieving students. The programme is part of the Wyke enrichment offering – activities and interests that are timetabled alongside academic studies.

Like Emily, students who want to develop their interest in becoming a doctor, dentist or vet, are looking to achieve 7s, 8s and 9s in their GCSE grades and complete their A Level study at Wyke, again targeting As and A*s.

To find out more about the Pre-Medical Programme watch the video above on this page.
