T Levels are new two-year, Level 3 study programmes offering students an alternative to A Levels, BTEC/CTECs and Apprenticeships. They are particularly suited to students wanting to gain experience in the workplace alongside college academic and skills development studies.
The typical T Level student will likely have a clear idea as to the industry sector they wish to pursue as a career and an idea of the type of job role they would like to explore as a career.
THE COMPUTING DEPARTMENT AT WYKE SIXTH FORM COLLEGE
The department uses a number of hi-tech IT suites equipped with the latest hardware and software, a practical lab for the assembly and configuration of computers and networks, and also makes use of interactive on-line resources to facilitate independent learning. Practical skills are an essential part of the course and our well equipped IT suites supported by experienced teachers and skilled technicians ensure opportunities are available to enhance learning and develop skills and confidence in this subject.
This course is made up of both coursework and examinations. Students will complete a core assessment, which features an exam and an externally set and marked project, and an occupational specialist component, which features an externally set and marked project.
Core assessment: 66.66% exam, 33.33% externally set and marked project
Occupational specialist component: 100% externally set and marked project

CORE PROJECT—EMPLOYER SET PROJECT:
- Planning a project
- Identifying and fixing defects in existing code

OCCUPATIONAL SPECIALIST CONTENT – DESIGN, DEVELOPMENT & IMPLEMENTATION PROJECT:
- Be able to analyse a problem to define requirements and acceptance criteria aligned to user needs
- Apply ethical principles and manage risks in line with legal and regulatory requirements when developing software
- Discover, evaluate and apply reliable sources of knowledge
- Create solutions in a social and collaborative environment
- Implement a solution using at least two appropriate programming languages
- Test a software solution
- Change, maintain and support software
HOW THE COURSE IS DELIEVERED
A combination of college-based classroom theory and practical learning in one of our IT suites with the latest industry-standard software. Plus a minimum of 315 hours of industry placement with an employer to gain real experience of the workplace.
Students who choose to take this course will spend:
4 days in college, 1 day on placement – 1 week in October (after half term) & 2 weeks in June after exams
3 days in college, 2 days on placement – 1 week in October (after half term)
