Wyke Sixth Form College is a leading institution for supporting students across the region to access Oxford and Cambridge, the often cited ‘top two universities in the world.’

Each year, Wyke provides a valuable stepping stone for those wishing to secure places at these prestigious universities. In 2018, we celebrated a record number of students in doing so, with 9 students going on to study a wide variety of courses from Law to Biomedical Science.

The successful students came from state schools all across Hull, East Riding and North Lincolnshire from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds.

One of these students, Bridget Allenby of Cottingham High School said; “I am happy and over the moon right now. To be lucky enough to secure one of the 40 places available on the course is a huge achievement. Coming to Wyke has been a great step for me to take for my future.”

This exceptional outcome is a combined result of fantastic students working with excellent A Level specialist teacher’s in an outstanding college. We also have a dedicated Flyers Programme to help support students aspiring to Oxbridge and Russell Group universities.

In the current environment, were top universities tend to favour students from private schools and particular parts of the UK, this is demonstration that Wyke, an inclusive sixth form provider is going above and beyond in supporting all students in achieving their potential.

Outstanding Oxbridge success

By | Biology, Chemistry, Course News, News, Physchology

This year, Wyke Sixth Form College celebrated a record number of students receiving offers from Oxford and Cambridge, with eight students confirming that they achieved the grades to study at two of the most prestigious universities in the world.

Bridget Allenby achieved A* A*A* A, confirming her place at the University of Oxford to study Biomedical Sciences.

Upon opening her results, Bridget said: “I’m happy and just over the moon right now. To be lucky enough to be offered one of the 40 places available on the course was a huge achievement, but to finally know I’ve got the grades I needed is an amazing feeling. I’m excited to experience being a student at Oxford which is known internationally for it’s incredible academic reputation and high standards of teaching.”

For Alice Gowland, now studying Psychology at the University of Oxford, choosing to study at Wyke was due to the additional support and academic excellence of the college: “I chose to study at Wyke for its academic excellence. I also felt that Wyke would be the best college to support my ambition of studying at Oxford. As part of the Flyers programme, I was provided with a lot of support in being an early applicant to university. My teachers gave me the encouragement and confidence in myself to work hard to achieve the results that I have today.”

To see how we can help you in securing a place at a top university, come along to our Open Evening on Thursday 25th October 5.30pm-8pm.

So you want to be a doctor?

For the first time, the Royal Society of Medicine’s popular Medical Careers Day will be taking place in Hull at Wyke Sixth Form College on Thursday 12 October 2017.

Applying to medical school can be somewhat confusing. So the RSM has put together a service for school students, which aims to provide information needed to navigate your way through the application process and getting into medical school.

This day offer’s school students guidance from experts on the application process for applying to study medicine and gives an insight into life in the medical field.

The event is aimed at year 11/12 students, but younger students are also encouraged to attend if schools believe they would benefit from hearing more information on choosing a career in medicine.

The day will inform students interested in a medical career on how to choose the right medical school, provide tips on their interview technique and discuss the importance of the right work experience. Students will also gain an insight into life as a medical student.

Wyke Deputy Principal Mark Rothery said, “We are delighted that the Royal Society of Medicine have chosen this year to offer one of their hugely popular Medical Careers Day courses in Hull. It’s great to see another facet of the National recognition we are enjoying as City of Culture – we are certainly more on the map!

I’m doubly delighted that they have chosen Wyke Sixth Form College as the venue for the event. This one day conference is open to all Year 11 and 12 students that are considering becoming doctors.”

Principal, Jay Trivedy, said:
“In a year in which there has been so much curriculum change, these are another set of excellent results for our College.  They reflect the tremendous work of all of our staff and it is a pleasure to be able to work with such wonderful students.  The care, support and guidance offered at Wyke continues to be outstanding.  I would also like to thank parents for their unstinting dedication.
The staff at Wyke consistently show their expertise in bringing the best out of each and every student.  Sixth Form students are our sole focus and the students at Wyke show what can be achieved when the right teaching, support and facilities are there for them.

As one of the largest A-level providers in the region, I am absolutely delighted with the large number of students achieving the top grades and I know that our College will continue to provide the best possible education for the widest range of young people.  We have consistently shown what can be done in the city.  It is an engine of confidence and achievement for the future.
I am especially pleased that our Oxbridge applicants and our medical applicants have been so successful.  However, I am delighted for all the students and their achievements.  I would like to thank the families and all staff who have been so supportive of our students.”

Mr John Wilson, Chair of the Wyke Sixth Form College Corporation, added:
“Once again our students have achieved a fantastic set of results.  I congratulate them for their hard work and wish them well for the future.  Thanks must go to all the teaching and support staff for their hard work and dedication.”

Medical Students at Wyke

Record breaking year for our medics, dentists and vets

By | Applied Science, Biology, Chemistry, Course News, Health & Social Care, Mathematics, News, Physchology

In recent years, Wyke Sixth Form College has seen twenty-six students successfully go on to study medicine, dentistry and veterinary science at university. This is a figure Wyke are extremely proud of and this year it’s set to increase even more as we have a record number of students with offers for the above courses.

This year, nine students have gained places at fantastic universities across the country to study these prestigious courses; two students have been offered places to study dentistry, four for medicine and three are hoping to study veterinary science.

Valerie Evans, Head of Faculty, said, “All of our students have done fantastically well to secure these offers and we wish them the best of luck in the rest of their examinations. All the staff at Wyke have shown nothing but support to all our students applying to university and have gone above and beyond to help them secure the future they want and subsequently deserve.”

Former Malet Lambert student, Sian Forrester, has accepted an offer on a BDF Dentistry course at Sheffield University and has appreciated all the support offered by Wyke. She said, “Through the Wyke Medics Society I attended a dentistry summer school at Sheffield University. This introduced me to dental charting and working with phantom heads. The whole experience really gave me an insight to what it would be like to be a dentist.”

A full interview broadcast on BBC Radio Humberside with Sian and fellow medical students is available to watch on the Wyke YouTube channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHUEtdAqE4k

“Just-Being-Char”

By | Course News, English, Media, News, Physchology

Media Studies student Charlotte Daly received the star treatment for her work on her lifestyle blog site. Charlotte, a former South Hunsley student, is a massive fan of the ITV soap opera “Emmerdale”, a programme she regularly writes about on her website.

Earlier in the year Charlotte was invited by Yorkshire Television to a private viewing at The Emmerdale Studio Experience, an event exclusive to bloggers from Yorkshire. Charlotte said, “It was an interesting insight into the way television is made, and a brilliant opportunity to meet up with other bloggers from across the region. I got to visit the sets as well as gaining an insight to the production and post-production process.”

Charlotte is currently in her first year at Wyke studying A level Media Studies along English Language & Literature, Psychology and BTEC Creative Digital Media.
