Dr Nick Long

A diverse array of visiting speakers, together with a modern campus and a growing notable alumni, are offering current Wyke students a slice of university life whilst studying for their A levels.

Recently, the Sociology and Psychology departments have welcomed some renowned academics to the college. Dr Nick Long of the London School of Economics, and Ben Ambridge from the University of Liverpool, have both recently delivered lecturers as part of the student’s course enrichment.

Dr Nick Long’s talk referred to his own research in an exploration of anxiety and depression across global cultures. Ben Ambridge, author of “Are you Smarter than a Chimpanzee?”, held an entertaining session linking aspects of popular culture to A level psychology theories. Throughout both sessions, students took notes, participated in experiments and questioned the academics directly.

Both, Nick and Ben’s lectures are now available on the college YouTube channel, Wyke TV.

The causes and consequences of crime with Prison Me! No Way!

This week saw charity Prison Me No Way visit Wyke Sixth Form College to deliver some really thought provoking sessions for our Law and Criminology students.

The sessions were delivered by three prisoners who shared their own unique stories of crime, including the lifestyle choices which led to their imprisonment and the effects that this has had on themselves, their families and future.

The aim of the week was to compliment topics from their A Level and BTEC courses with first-hand accounts of the causes, consequences and penalties of crime.

Students were really appreciative of the open and honest accounts given and we would like to thank each individual for sharing their stories.

What are you currently studying at Wyke?

A Level Dance

Why did you choose to study at Wyke?

I chose to study at Wyke due to the specialist A Level teachers, good facilities and wide variety of courses to choose from such as Dance and Criminology.

There is also a more mature approach to learning compared to school and it provides a new and exciting environment with lots of opportunities.

What is your favourite experience of Wyke?

My favourite experience of Wyke so far has got to be the Sports presentation as it is a really fun and inclusive event celebrating sporting achievements throughout the college.

Have you taken part in any of our enrichment opportunities and if so what do you enjoy about this?

Yes, in my first year I was involved in both the Netball first team and Dance team and I have followed the Dance team through to my second year. I really enjoyed both of these enrichments.

In your opinion, what is your greatest achievement at College so far?

Getting through to the Blackpool Winter Gardens semi-final competition in Dance has been my highlight. Wyke were the only college there, competing against professional Dance groups!

What are your aspirations for the future?

I am aiming to study a degree in Professional Dance in London at a Vocational College and then progress in a Dancing career from there.

What do you like to do outside of College?

Outside of College, I Dance at NAPA three days a week.

If you had to describe Wyke in one word, what would it be?

Exceptional.

What do you study at Wyke?

Why did you choose to study at Wyke?

I wanted a fresh start rather than staying on at school.

I visited Wyke at a number of open days and I liked how it had a university style feel and that students have a lot more freedom and the opportunity to be more independent.

Unlike staying on at school, I also have specialist A Level teachers who are solely focused on you.

What is your favourite experience of Wyke?

I went on Wyke’s trip to South Africa where I was able to volunteer in disadvantaged areas for two weeks helping to improve living conditions for people there with other Wyke students and staff. This was in association with the charity Botshabelo – it was a fantastic experience!

Have you been involved in any of Wyke’s enrichment opportunities?

Alongside the volunteering trip to South Africa, I have been on quite a few subject trips for Criminology which have all been really interesting. I am also part of the Wyke’s Flyers Programme.

What is your greatest achievement at College so far?

Achieving an A in my Criminology course has definitely been one of my greatest achievements. I have also recently completed my UCAS application and believe I did this to the best of my ability too!

What are your aspirations for the future?

I’d love to go to University to study Biomedical Science and in the future branch out and specialise in Forensic Science.

What do you like to do outside of College?

I dance at my dance academy three times a week and participate in exams in various genres, pantomimes and shows.

If you had to describe Wyke in one word what would it be?

Inclusive

Oxbridge Applications

Record Number of Oxbridge Offers

Wyke Sixth Form College is celebrating a record number of students receiving Oxbridge offers for September 2018.

This year, eleven students have received offers, with two students offered a place onto a course with just 35 places available nationally.

Assistant Principal and Coordinator of the Flyers Programme Jamie Davies said, “we are thrilled that a record number of students have received Oxbridge offers for September 2018. I would like to pass on my congratulations to all of the students and it is a testament to their enthusiasm, dedication and hard work. They have all taken extra enrichment activities, completed Extended Project Qualifications and participated in workshops and interview preparation events supported by staff at Wyke along with the University of Oxford, the University of Hull and industry professionals from the local area to support their applications.”

Outstanding Results at Wyke

Yet again, students at Wyke Sixth Form College have shown a combination of talent and hard work to achieve outstanding success.  This, combined with superb teaching and the best possible facilities, has meant that 99.6% of students have achieved a pass grade at A-level with 29 subjects achieving 100% pass rate.

At A-level, we have had an increase in the proportion of students achieving the much coveted A* grade (97 students), and the proportion achieving A*- B grades has increased to 47%.

Once again our BTEC results were outstanding with 62 students achieving 3 triple Distinctions in comparison to 31 students in 2016.
Principal, Jay Trivedy, said:
“In a year in which there has been so much curriculum change, these are another set of excellent results for our College.  They reflect the tremendous work of all of our staff and it is a pleasure to be able to work with such wonderful students.  The care, support and guidance offered at Wyke continues to be outstanding.  I would also like to thank parents for their unstinting dedication.
The staff at Wyke consistently show their expertise in bringing the best out of each and every student.  Sixth Form students are our sole focus and the students at Wyke show what can be achieved when the right teaching, support and facilities are there for them.

As one of the largest A-level providers in the region, I am absolutely delighted with the large number of students achieving the top grades and I know that our College will continue to provide the best possible education for the widest range of young people.  We have consistently shown what can be done in the city.  It is an engine of confidence and achievement for the future.
I am especially pleased that our Oxbridge applicants and our medical applicants have been so successful.  However, I am delighted for all the students and their achievements.  I would like to thank the families and all staff who have been so supportive of our students.”
