Top 10% Status Confirmed!

By | Awards, Biology, Chemistry, Course News, Media, News, Physics, Sociology

Wyke Sixth Form College are proudly celebrating another exceptionally successful year. The Department for Education 16-18 performance tables, published today, confirm that Wyke is “the best” A level provider in Hull, the East Riding and North Lincolnshire, placing us in the top 10% of all schools and colleges in the country.

In addition, Ofsted’s recently published Inspection Data Summary Report, highlights our students’ achievements as significantly above the national average. Students studying Biology, Sociology, Chemistry, Physics, Sport/PE and Graphics make particularly significant progress.

Examples of Wyke students who made exceptional progress are former Sirius West student, Bongani Mathema who gained a place on BSc(Hons) Sports & Exercise Science at Loughborough University with three A*s in Biology, PE and Psychology. Will Brandrick, former Baysgarth student, achieved three As in science to secure a place to study Medicine at Lincoln University. And, in an amazing year, former Hessle High student, Daisy Betts won a national dance competition, and gained A*\A\A in Dance, PE and Criminology to move onto a Dance degree at LIPA.

Wyke’s GCSE success is also highlighted in the document. Students on our foundation year, re-taking their GCSEs, are making notable progress. 68% of students who didn’t achieve a GCSE pass in English at school have improved by a grade, with 62% who didn’t achieve a GCSE pass in maths, making similar progress.

Alongside our A level students, 80% of students on vocational programmes, including Health & Social Care, Applied Law, Sport, Music Technology, Creative Media, Performing Arts, Applied Science and IT, achieve the equivalent of three A*s.

In this academic year, outstanding results accompany other indicators of excellence. Our Sport, PE and Dance teachers won the Pearson Teaching Team of the Year Award, eight students have received offers from Oxbridge and our Pre-medical Programme has grown by over 100%.

Principal Paul Britton said, “I couldn’t be more proud of the hard work, determination and effort that all our students and staff put into ensuring that the young people of Hull, East Riding and North Lincolnshire can achieve exceptional success.  These results show that we are well on our way to being the best sixth form college in the country.”

Wyke are currently interviewing students for a September start and welcome applications through the college website, wyke.ac.uk, LogOnMoveOn and Lincs2u.

Science Joins the Excellence Network

By | Applied Science, Awards, Biology, Chemistry, Course News, News, Physics

Head of Chemistry, Paul Yardley, and Head of Biology, Lee Baxter, have been invited to contribute to a teaching excellence working day this autumn.

Due to the outstanding exam performance in both subjects, Paul and Lee are going to spend the day discussing their teaching methods, spreading their good practice, with other teachers from across the UK.

Both A Level Biology and Chemistry recorded a significant positive value added grade, with students achieving at least half an A level grade higher than their predicted grade. The data is based upon the 2018 A Level results and the science department is looking forward to further involvement when their 2019 exam results are analysed.

The Education Training Foundation (EFT), the government-backed, sector-owned national support body for the Further Education and Training sector, supports this network meeting. With over 20,000 members, it is the largest professional membership organisation for practitioners in the post-16 sector. The EFT remains the only body which confers Qualified Teaching Learning and Skills status and Advanced Teacher Status.

There will an opportunity to talk with the science teaching staff at our forthcoming open events, with dates from October to February. For further details of dates and timings please visit, https://wyke.ac.uk/events/category/open-events/

Weatherill Twins

Oxford Twins

By | Chemistry, Course News, Mathematics, News, Physics

2018 was another outstanding year at Wyke Sixth Form College. Students on the college’s flagship Flyers programme celebrated a record number of offers from Oxford and Cambridge. On A Level results day, eight students confirmed that they had achieved the grades to study at two of the most prestigious universities in the world. This was an even greater achievement when you consider that other institutions in the region had reported limited success in progression to Oxbridge.

Former Withernsea High students Lucy and Katie Weatherill gained excellent A levels in Physics, Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Chemistry to secure their offers. They are currently both studying at the University of Oxford, Katie reading Physics at Christ Church College and Lucy taking Chemistry at Balliol College. “Proud Mum” Mrs Wetherill recently emailed Wyke photographs of both Lucy and Katie attending their matriculation, a ceremony that marks their formal admission to the University.

To see how we can help you in securing a place at a Russell Group University or how to access the Flyers programme, come along to our Open Evening on Thursday 17th January 5.30pm-8pm.

“An excellent preperation for applying to Medicine”

By | Biology, Chemistry, Course News, News, Physics, Religious Studies

The eyes of millions of breakfast television viewers were on former Hornsea School student Max Joy as he opened his results live on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, revealing the 1 A* in Chemistry and 2 A’s in Biology and Maths that secured his place at Hull York Medical School.

“I chose Hull York Medical School after attending open events where I fell in love with it. The staff and the experiences that I had there were amazing. As a student at Wyke Sixth Form College I was part of the Pre-Medical Programme which was excellent in preparing for me for the whole process of applying to Medicine which included help with the entrance examinations, advice on my UCAS application and mock interviews.

Wyke is a fantastic college and I have absolutely loved every single moment. My subjects, the experiences and the teachers are amazing.”

Max was just one of 9 Wyke students who secured a place on a Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science (MDV) courses last year.

Wyke’s Pre-Medical Programme

We recognise that University applications for MDV courses are highly competitive, therefore, we offer an established two-year Programme to support students aspiring to these careers.

Our Pre-Medical Programme ensures our students are well advised about all aspects of their future career and receive all of the guidance and support needed to make a competitive application. Whether this is individual subject support to secure top grades, help locating work experience, information on university applications or preparation for interview, Wyke Sixth Form College is there at each stage of student’s Medical career journey.

We also welcome first-class speakers, organise high-quality workshops and run a variety of events including the popular Royal Society of Medicine Careers Day.

Wyke Sixth Form College is a leading institution for supporting students across the region to access Oxford and Cambridge, the often cited ‘top two universities in the world.’

Each year, Wyke provides a valuable stepping stone for those wishing to secure places at these prestigious universities. In 2018, we celebrated a record number of students in doing so, with 9 students going on to study a wide variety of courses from Law to Biomedical Science.

The successful students came from state schools all across Hull, East Riding and North Lincolnshire from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds.

One of these students, Bridget Allenby of Cottingham High School said; “I am happy and over the moon right now. To be lucky enough to secure one of the 40 places available on the course is a huge achievement. Coming to Wyke has been a great step for me to take for my future.”

This exceptional outcome is a combined result of fantastic students working with excellent A Level specialist teacher’s in an outstanding college. We also have a dedicated Flyers Programme to help support students aspiring to Oxbridge and Russell Group universities.

In the current environment, were top universities tend to favour students from private schools and particular parts of the UK, this is demonstration that Wyke, an inclusive sixth form provider is going above and beyond in supporting all students in achieving their potential.

This year, Wyke Sixth Form College celebrated a record number of students receiving offers from Oxford and Cambridge, with eight students confirming that they achieved the grades to study at two of the most prestigious universities in the world.

Bridget Allenby achieved A* A*A* A, confirming her place at the University of Oxford to study Biomedical Sciences.

Upon opening her results, Bridget said: “I’m happy and just over the moon right now. To be lucky enough to be offered one of the 40 places available on the course was a huge achievement, but to finally know I’ve got the grades I needed is an amazing feeling. I’m excited to experience being a student at Oxford which is known internationally for it’s incredible academic reputation and high standards of teaching.”

For Alice Gowland, now studying Psychology at the University of Oxford, choosing to study at Wyke was due to the additional support and academic excellence of the college: “I chose to study at Wyke for its academic excellence. I also felt that Wyke would be the best college to support my ambition of studying at Oxford. As part of the Flyers programme, I was provided with a lot of support in being an early applicant to university. My teachers gave me the encouragement and confidence in myself to work hard to achieve the results that I have today.”

To see how we can help you in securing a place at a top university, come along to our Open Evening on Thursday 25th October 5.30pm-8pm.
