The College are very proud that artwork produced by three Wyke students – Ethar, Akram and Waieel Dirar will be on display at the Artwaves Festival at the Bridlington Spa.
The theme of the Dirars artwork focuses on telling the story of the perilous journeys that refugees and asylum seekers are forced to endure to reach safety, something that the family have first-hand experience of, living in a refugee camp for four years before moving to the U.K.
In an interview on the ArtWaves Festival website, the Dirars said that “art helped us cope with our life in limbo, living in a tent in a refugee camp… We feel passionately for the refugees risking their lives everyday across the sea. We lost many friends to the sea as they tried to flee. Through our paintings, drawings and words, we share our story in the hope of raising awareness of their plight and this important issue.”
The ArtWaves Festival runs from 22nd-23rd June, with a full programme of events available on their website.
