Wyke Flyers

Our Wyke Flyers programme consists of additional events and activities that we offer to students who are academic highflyers.

The aim of the programme is to support and provide academic challenge to students and provide pathways and support to access top performing institutions in the UK and beyond.

The Flyers programme is not designed to pressure students in any way, and indeed most of its elements are optional. Initially we look for students who have achieved an average of “A grades” across their GSCE profile. The programme is also not exclusive; throughout the year students with excellent progress at Wyke will be able to join the programme.

The key strands of the Wyke Flyers programme are:

  • Senior mentoring by a named member of senior staff.
  • Russell Group university visits.
  • Oxbridge preparation through trips, conferences and HE+ events.
  • Senior staff supervisor for EPQ
  • Planned foreign exchange opportunities

Year after year Wyke Flyers use the benefits of the programme to progress onto Oxbridge or to start careers in Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science.

Harry DavisHarry Davis decided to come to Wyke from Baysgarth School because of “the reputation, great results and the nice learning environment.” Harry has found that being on the flyers programme has been fantastic for giving him that extra help and push towards choosing higher education and Russell Group universities and then being able to visit these Universities’ Open Days. “Having workshops for applications and personal statements really made the process so much easier for me, and knowing that I will get help with interviews too makes me have the confidence to apply for the top universities,” Harry explained.

  • Lydia Shearsmith

Lydia ShearsmithLydia Shearsmith is a former Hull Collegiate student and chose to come to Wyke because “of the facilities and the freedom you get to be yourself.” Lydia has really enjoyed being on the Flyers programme as she has seen the advice given to her through her one to one mentoring sessions as invaluable; “it has really helped me keep on track with all of my subjects as well as pushing me to produce and complete a really interesting EPQ”. She would highly recommend the programme and her advice would be to “make the most of all the extra help as it really pays off.”
