BTEC Level 3 – Applied Science


Level 3 Applied Science is an ideal BTEC for those students who are aiming for a broad range of science related careers. This qualification allows for progression into many science related degree subjects at university, such as nursing, midwifery, biomedical sciences, physiotherapy, radiology and many others. This is a course for students who are interested in science but find the emphasis on assessment by examinations does not allow them to show their full potential.

  • Who Is This Course For?

    The Applied Science course will allow you to study how science is applied in many different types of professions and industries. The focus of the course is scientific usage, concentrating on how scientists and others use science in their work.

    The department uses a specialist laboratory that is equipped to the highest standards. In addition there are two dedicated computer rooms for completion of coursework and an open access computer area adjacent to the laboratories.

    The department makes wide ranging use of interactive on-line resources to facilitate independent learning.

    During this course you will be able to:
    – follow a programme of learning which is practically-based and which improves your practical skills;
    – follow a varied science programme covering Biology, Chemistry and Physics;
    – work independently on a number of projects;
    – learn about the work of different types of people using science and scientific skills that they use; keep track of your progress and achievement throughout the course through a programme of continuous assessment.

    We will offer: Subsidiary Diploma (1 – A level equivalent) and Diploma (2—A level equivalent)

    BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Applied Science (Medical Science)
    This course is equivalent in size to an A level, and has been designed to occupy one third of the curriculum within a broader programme of study. The Subsidiary Diploma allows time in the curriculum to study other qualifications alongside it, such as A levels, e.g. Science, Psychology, or another BTEC Level 3, e.g. Sport, Health and Social Care or IT.

    BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Applied Science (Medical Science)
    This course is equivalent in size to two A levels providing extensive opportunity to study a range of scientific areas. The Diploma allows time in the curriculum to study other qualifications alongside it, such as A levels, e.g. Science, Psychology, or another BTEC Level 3, e.g. Sport, Health and Social Care, or IT.
