A Level – Physical Education


This course will be useful for students with a genuine interest in Sport who wish to study the theory behind the practical side of PE. It is particularly useful for those who are thinking of a career in PE teaching, Physiotherapy, Sports Science, or being involved in the Leisure and Recreation industry.

  • Who Is This Course For?

    This course will be useful for students with a genuine interest in Sport who wish to study the theory behind the practical side of Physical Education. It is particularly useful for those who are thinking of a career in PE teaching, physiotherapy, Sports Science, or being involved in the Leisure and Recreation industry. The course will focus on the application of knowledge and provide students with the opportunity to develop transferable skills for employment and further study.

    It should be stressed that this is essentially an academic subject and not purely a practical one.

    Students will be assessed in three different components. Component 1 focuses on the key systems of the human body involved in movement and physical activity. Component 2 looks into the psychological factors affecting physical activities and sports. This includes models and theories that affect learning and performance in physical activities. Component 3 focuses on the sociological and contemporary issues that influence and affect physical activity and sport for both the audience and the performer, and how sport affects society.

    Physiology Factors (Examination 1 – 30%)

    This component focuses on the key systems of the human body involved in movement and physical activity, such as the musculoskeletal, cardio-respiratory and neuro-muscular systems. Learners will develop knowledge and understanding of the changes within these systems during differing intensities of exercise and during recovery. Exercise physiology will focus on the adaptations to the body systems through training or lifestyle, and how these changes affect the efficiency of that system.

    Psychological Factors (Examination 2 – 20%)  

    This component focuses on the psychological factors affecting physical activities and sports. This includes models and theories that affect learning and performance in physical activities, how different methods of training and feedback work and why their effectiveness differs from person to person. It also includes psychological factors affecting group dynamics and the effects of leadership and stress on performers. theories to practical examples, giving guidance and feedback in constructive ways that are suited to that individual’s personality; therefore, assisting in developing practical performance in physical activities and sports.

    Socio-cultural and Contemporary (Examination 3 – 20%)

    This component focuses on the sociological and contemporary issues that influence and affect physical activity and sport for both the audience and the performer, and how sport affects society. It includes the emergence and evolution of modern sport and you will analyse how social and cultural factors have shaped the characteristics of sports and pastimes in a timeline from pre-industrial Britain to the 21st century.

    Practical assessment in Sport (Practical – 30%)

    This component focuses on two assessments. The first assessment is performance in one practical activity (either performing or coaching one chosen activity from the approved lists). Learners are required to demonstrate effective performance, the use of tactics or techniques and the ability to observe the rules and conventions under competitive conditions, and this is initially assessed internally.

    Assessment

    70% Theoretical Examination. A total of four hours assessment split over three examination papers. These will be taken at the end of the two year course in a wide range of questioning styles including; single mark, short answer and extended response questions.

    30%Practical Assessment in Sport. You will be assessed in one practical performance, as either a coach or a performer in an activity. You will also be required to analyse a sporting performance in the form of a verbal assessment.

    The Physical Education Department

    The department is made up of dedicated teachers and coaches. They all teach either BTEC Sport or A Level PE and also coach one of our many sports teams, who compete every Wednesday afternoon.

    Sport is a big part of everyday life at the College. We offer both competitive sports and recreational sports for students who simply wish to just stay fit and healthy.

    The Sports teams train every Monday for two hours and compete in the Association Of Colleges Sports league and cups every Wednesday.

    Rugby League Rugby Union

    Recreational activities include Badminton, table tennis, Zumba, Insanity, cricket, Volleyball and many more. All students within the College are allowed and encouraged to take part. This is not exclusive to PE students.

    The PE department organise two trips per year. We run a sports tour to the Isle of Man, where our Football and Netball teams compete against their teams. We also run an outward bound trip to Wales, which involves activities such as Rock climbing, Bush craft and river walking.

  • Progression:

    Students could progress straight into employment in the leisure and recreation field. Many students progress onto degrees in Sports studies, human movement studies, leisure and recreation courses or train to be Physical Education teachers. This course is also a suitable basis for anyone wishing to continue on to nursing or physiotherapy.
