By | Community, Government & Politics, Media, News

Wyke has been acknowledged as a cultural icon for Hull in the promotional material for Kings Of Hull, a comedy written and directed by John Godber.

According to the Hull 2017 website, “The Kings of Hull tells the remarkable story of the King family across three generations. From life on the docks, to Hull prison, a lottery win and success in the coal trade; this is a family whose sons and daughters are struggling to cope in a changing world. The Kings are a family bonded by love but divided by rugby, a river and sibling rivalry. Join us at their Golden Wedding, before the gloves come off; for a celebration of life in town, from the 1960s through to Brexit and beyond. Whether it’s love, hate, success or failure, the Kings always come out fighting.”

The play will be performed at the newly renovated Hull New Theatre from 27th September-7th October.

In the Red Corner

Congratulations to former Wyke student Emma Hardy on her election to Parliament. Emma is now the Labour MP representing Hull West and Hessle. She successfully contested the seat against a challenge mounted by a confident Conservative candidate to the seat formally held by long serving former Labour Minister Alan Johnson.

Emma will face another former student, Andrew Percy MP, who is the Conservative Minister for the Northern Powerhouse, representing Brigg and Goole. Andrew has now defended his seat at three successive elections and is seen by many as a rising star in the world of politics.

You won’t be surprised to discover that both studied A Level Government & Politics whilst at Wyke.

In recent years, Wyke Sixth Form College has seen twenty-six students successfully go on to study medicine, dentistry and veterinary science at university. This is a figure Wyke are extremely proud of and this year it’s set to increase even more as we have a record number of students with offers for the above courses.

This year, nine students have gained places at fantastic universities across the country to study these prestigious courses; two students have been offered places to study dentistry, four for medicine and three are hoping to study veterinary science.

Valerie Evans, Head of Faculty, said, “All of our students have done fantastically well to secure these offers and we wish them the best of luck in the rest of their examinations. All the staff at Wyke have shown nothing but support to all our students applying to university and have gone above and beyond to help them secure the future they want and subsequently deserve.”

Former Malet Lambert student, Sian Forrester, has accepted an offer on a BDF Dentistry course at Sheffield University and has appreciated all the support offered by Wyke. She said, “Through the Wyke Medics Society I attended a dentistry summer school at Sheffield University. This introduced me to dental charting and working with phantom heads. The whole experience really gave me an insight to what it would be like to be a dentist.”

A full interview broadcast on BBC Radio Humberside with Sian and fellow medical students is available to watch on the Wyke YouTube channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHUEtdAqE4k
