Wyke Students Celebrate Biology Success

By | Course News, News

A record 6,189 students from 582 schools took part in the British Biology Olympiad (BBO) this year, with Wyke entering eleven second year students in the first round.

The first round consisted of two one hour multiple choice papers taken online in schools in January. The 34% of students who achieved Gold, Silver or Bronze awards, will be invited to attend a Society awards ceremony later this year.

Wyke students placed highly in the challenging test, which is designed to assess biology knowledge above A-Level standard. Eight of our students placed in the top 34%, achieving Bronze awards, with Miguel Barrulas achieving a Silver award and placing in the top 18% of students participating nationally. The achievements of Wyke students in this competition are shown below:

  • Miguel Barrulas – Silver
  • Sophie Daly – Bronze
  • Heather Smith – Bronze
  • Hannah Jesney – Bronze
  • Alice Nicholls – Bronze
  • Liam Barratt – Bronze
  • Emily Blackburn – Bronze
  • Caitlin Marshall – Bronze
  • Lucia Brown – Bronze
  • Emily Hawcroft – Bronze

Dr Andrew Treharne MBE CBiol FSB, Chair, UK Biology Competitions said: “This is another record-breaking year for participation and the standard of entries was as high as ever. Many congratulations to all those students who have been awarded medals and certificates.”

Each of the Bronze and Silver medallists has been invited to the Royal Institution in London for the official prize-giving ceremony and a lecture from Dr David Chivers of the University of Cambridge.

A Perfect Year

By | News, Sport

Jemma Purfield rounded off a perfect year of sporting achievement when she collected the “Wyke Sports Personality of the Year” at the college sports presentation evening. The annual award is voted for by sports students and staff at Wyke and it’s always a fiercely contested competition.

Jemma follows in the footsteps of last years winner Sophie Haywood, our first female sports personality, as she too is destined to study sport and further her football career at an American university.

This year has been an outstanding year for the women’s football team at Wyke. Jemma captained the team to the national cup final, scoring the goal of the game with an amazing free-kick. Unsurprisingly the team collected the “Wyke Team of the Year” award, adding another trophy to Jemma’s collection.

Special guest, Olympic gold medal winner and professional boxer Luke Campbell presented Jemma with her award in front of a massive crowd of fellow students and staff. On Twitter she posted, “Had an amazing night last night, going to miss Wyke and everyone there so much!.”

Highlights of the evening are now available to view on our YouTube and Flickr pages.
