The Duke of Edinburgh is all about going the extra mile, gaining new skills, pushing yourself physically, helping others and exploring new territories. At the same time, you’ll gather friendships, experiences and memories that will last a lifetime. Any young person can do their DofE – regardless of ability, gender, background or location. Achieving an Award isn’t a competition or about being first. It’s all about setting personal challenges and pushing boundaries. Excellent on UCAS applications and job applications – this award can help get you where you want to go.
At Wyke we offer the Gold level of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards – designed for students who are 16-25 years old. The DofE award scheme is open to all – no prior experience of bronze or silver award levels is required and we will train you in walking and navigational techniques.
You will have one session a week with a leader in college to work on all 5 sections of the award – physical, skill, volunteering, expedition and residential. We will mainly focus on the expedition skills you will need for your trip to wild country for your first practice expedition in your Y1 sessions. There are day walks to attend on weekends to practice your navigational skills and build your teamwork and confidence in the outdoors, and then at the end of Y1 you will participate in your 3 day, 3-night practice expedition to the North Yorkshire Moors. In the second year of the award you will plan your full qualifying expedition of 4 days and 4 nights to wild country.
