Entry Requirements
CTEC Extended Certificate in Sport requires students to achieve at least the minimum entry requirements for their chosen pathway plus a grade 5 or higher in GCSE PE/ Merit in Level 2 BTEC Sport. If not studied at Level 2, students must achieve a grade 5 or higher in GCSE Science. CTEC Extended Diploma in Sport requires students to achieve at least the minimum entry requirements for their chosen pathway plus a grade 4 or higher in GCSE PE/Merit in Level 2 BTEC Sport. If not studied at Level 2, students must achieve a grade 4 in GCSE Science.

CTEC Extended Certificate in Sport requires students to achieve at least the minimum entry requirements for your chosen pathway plus a grade 5 or higher in GCSE PE/ Merit in Level 2 BTEC Sport. If not studied at Level 2, students must achieve a grade 5 or higher in GCSE Science. Sport

This course is designed for students who would like a career in sport including those students who are still unsure as to what area of sport this could be. The course specialises in coaching, sports development, fitness, nutrition, teaching, sports rehabilitation and business. It is suitable for students who are aiming to go on to university and study a sports related degree including Sports Rehabilitation; those looking to gain access onto Higher Training Apprenticeships; those looking to get into PE teaching, to gain employment within the Leisure and Recreation Industry including Leisure Centre Management, Sports Coaching, Fitness Instructor.

Course Structure

Physical Education, Sport and Dance has always played an important role here at Wyke Sixth Form College, and although we are not a sports college we have twice been crowned “National Sports College of the year”. Students acquire so many experiences from competing in National championships to competing against fellow students in an intra-tutor league, whatever the level and capability, there is something for everyone. The Sports Department has seen exceptional success both academically and competitively. Not only does the department offer both A Level and CTEC courses to accommodate a number of students across all assessment methods it is also ranked in the top one percent nationally. Subjects are taught by A Level and CTEC Level 3 specialist teachers and the coaching staff are of the highest calibre. Each member of staff is trained and dedicated to not only reach academic success but also reach the highest accolade possible when it comes to competing.

In 2019 the department won a Pearson National Teaching Award and were announced best FE teaching team in the country.

CTEC EXTENDED CERTIFICATE (1 A LEVEL EQUIVALENT)

UNIT 1: BODY SYSTEMS

In this unit, you will explore how the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems function and the fundamentals of the energy systems.

UNIT 2: SPORTS COACHING & ACTIVITY LEADERSHIP

Students explore the theory behind what it takes to make a good coach. Learners will also explore the roles and responsibilities of coaches and leaders. Learners will develop the techniques, personal knowledge and ability to deliver coaching sessions.

UNIT 3: SPORTS ORGANISATION AND DEVELOPMENT

Students will gain an understanding of the organisations involved in sport in the UK, their roles and responsibilities and how they work together.

UNIT 10: BIOMETRICS AND MOVEMENT ANALYSIS

Students will explore the different planes and axes of movement, types of movement and the levers that the body uses. Learners will also analyse movement in order to improve performance.

UNIT 17: SPORTS INJURIES AND REHABILITATION

Students will explore how to recognise and treat common sports injuries both immediately and through rehabilitation programmes.

CTEC DIPLOMA (2 A LEVEL EQUIVALENT)

This course includes the Extended Certificate units plus:

UNIT 4: WORKING SAFELY IN SPORT

Students will gain an understanding of key safety requirements, including key health and safety legislation.

UNIT 6: GROUP EXERCISE TO MUSIC

Students will be introduced to the different types of group exercise to music. Planning group exercise sessions considering the needs of participants.

UNIT 7: IMPROVING FITNESS FOR SPORT

Students will explore the various components of fitness and the methods of training used to enhance these. You will plan and deliver fitness training programmes to meet the needs of individuals.

UNIT 11: PHYSICAL ACTIVITY FOR SPECIFIC GROUPS

Students will explore how different groups of people benefit physiologically, psychologically and sociologically from participating in physical activity.

UNIT 13: HEALTH AND FITNESS TESTING FOR SPORT

Students will explore a range of fitness tests looking at what they test and the advantages and disadvantages of these.

UNIT 19: SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY

In this unit you will learn different motivations that people have for participating in sport and exercise and how performance can be managed through an understanding of attribution theory, stress and group dynamics. You will also learn the impacts that participation in sport and exercise can have on a person’s mental health and wellbeing, whether an elite performer or a member of the general public.

CTEC EXTENDED DIPLOMA (3 A LEVEL EQUIVALENT)

This course includes the Extended Certificate and Diploma units plus:

UNIT 5: PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS IN SPORT & EXERCISE

Students will gain the knowledge and skills required to carry out performance profiling and analysis and deliver feedback to performers.

UNIT 8: ORGANISATION OF SPORTS EVENTS

Students will learn how to plan, prepare for and deliver a sporting event including looking at topics such as logistics, budgeting, marketing and contingency planning.

UNIT 12: NUTRITION AND DIET FOR SPORT & EXERCISE

Students will gain an understanding of what is meant by the term ‘balanced diet’, the relationship between energy intake and energy expenditure and how this changes depending on the sport or physical activity taking place.

UNIT 14: WORKING IN ACTIVE LEISURE

Students will explore the day-to-day running duties that are carried out within an active leisure environment, ensuring that it is fit for purpose

Unit 18: Practical Skills in Sport and Physical Activity

Students will undertake a variety of sporting activities, gaining an understanding of the practical skills needed to be successful.

UNIT 21: THE BUSINESS OF SPORT

Students will learn about the structure and purpose of different sports businesses, who their customers are and how they use staff and volunteers to run their organisation and meet their goals.

HOW THE COURSE IS DELIVERED

The course is delivered through a series of theoretical and practical based lessons. The Extended certificate course will see you undertake 4 lessons per week and the Extended Diploma course will be conducted via 12 lessons per week

preparation for the course

To help prepare yourself for this course, we recommend that you visit the PE and Sport department at one of our open days which run from October to January each year. We also recommend that you attend taster sessions in Physical Education at our Wyke Start taster event in July. Summer work will also be available for you to complete following Wyke Start helping to prepare you for your first few weeks on the course.

What are the
Next Steps?

Students could progress straight into employment in the leisure and recreation field. Many students progress onto degrees or Higher apprenticeships in Sports Therapy, Personal Training, Sports Studies, Coaching, Human Movement Studies, Leisure and Recreation courses or train to be Physical Education teachers. This course is also a suitable basis for anyone wishing to continue on to Physiotherapy, Sports Science and Sports Retail; or those looking to enter the Uniformed Services.

The Wyke Experience

Enrichment sport is open to anyone who would like to try new things, meet people or just exercise. Wyke is nationally renowned for its sporting excellence – twice winners of “Sports College of the Year”. All students have the opportunity to take part in sport even at a recreational level and the College Study programme enables students to play a vast amount of different sports.

PERSONAL TRAINING PROGRAMME

The Sport department are offering the Gym Instructor and Personal Trainer Qualification exclusively for students studying on any of the Sport & PE courses. The Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instructing is a foundation course, to be studied in the first year, that allows progression to higher level qualifications, but more importantly provides a qualification recognised by employers as a necessity should you be considering a coaching/fitness-based career .

Overview: This qualification aims to provide learners with the knowledge and skills to be able to plan, deliver and supervise safe and effective exercise programmes within a gym or health club environment.

During the qualification learners will cover:
  • Anatomy, physiology and nutrition and how they relate to exercise and fitness
  • Health and safety in the fitness environment
  • The skills to conduct client and group inductions in a gym-based environment and support exercise adherence and a healthy lifestyle
  • The skills to plan, instruct and supervise safe and effective exercise and physical activity sessions
  • Professionalism for fitness instructing including personal and professional development, and delivering exceptional customer service
Assessment: Practical assessments, worksheets, multiple choice exam and written assignments

Progression: Level 3 Personal Training qualification (available at Wyke in your 2nd year) and Level 2 specialist qualifications including Kettlebells, Circuits, Studio Cycling and Group Exercise (available at a discount through our external training provider)
